What type of hand needle is best for quilting?

Betweens (also called quilting needles) are the traditional choice for hand quilting — they’re short, strong, and designed for making small, even stitches through multiple layers. Sizes 10–12 are favored by experienced hand quilters.

What needle should I use for hand applique?

Applique needles (also called Straw or Milliner’s needles) are long and fine, making them ideal for the blind stitch or needle-turn applique techniques. Size 11 or 12 is a popular choice.

What hand needle do I use to stitch down quilt binding?

A size 10 or 11 Betweens or a fine Sharp needle works beautifully for hand-stitching binding to the back of a quilt. The smaller the needle, the more invisible your stitches will be.
