What kind of pins are best for quilting?

Long, fine quilting pins (also called applique or flower-head pins) work best for quilting because they glide easily through multiple fabric layers and hold flat without distorting your patchwork seams.

What is the difference between glass-head and plastic-head pins?

Glass-head pins are heat-resistant and won’t melt if accidentally pressed with an iron, making them the preferred choice for quilting. Plastic-head pins should be removed before ironing to avoid damage.

How many pins do I need for a quilt project?

For basting a quilt sandwich, you’ll want a generous supply — many quilters use one pin every 3 to 4 inches across the entire quilt. A pack of 100 or more is a good starting point for bed-sized quilts.

Should I use pins or clips for quilting?

Both work well! Pins are great for precision placement and holding seams flat during sewing. Clips are faster for binding and curved edges. Many quilters keep both on hand.
