What is a fat quarter?

A fat quarter is a quarter-yard cut of fabric measuring approximately 18 x 22 inches — wider and squarer than a standard quarter-yard cut (9 x 44 inches). The extra width makes fat quarters ideal for cutting larger quilt blocks and applique shapes.

How many fat quarters do I need to make a quilt?

It depends on the pattern, but a typical lap quilt uses 12–20 fat quarters. A bundle of 20–40 fat quarters is often enough for a full-size quilt when combined with a background or sashing fabric.

Are fat quarter bundles pre-coordinated?
